Honoring Loved Ones: Exploring the Roots of Memorial Day Decorating and the Community's Preservation of the Practice.

Memorial Day originated on May 30th, 1868; at the time it was referred to as Decoration Day. It was first recognized by the National Cemetery Administration division of the Department of Veterans Affairs, to honor both Union and Confederate soldiers who had given their lives in the Civil War. Memorial Day became an official holiday in 1971, marking it as the last Monday in the month of May. Over the years the holiday has adapted and become a time to honor all those who have passed, but still has a special focus on veterans. Some common Memorial Day practices include decorating graves with flowers, flags, and monument pieces as well has having family gatherings, and attending parades.
